GLOBAL 2000 – Plastic Ocean
Global 2000 has been fighting for a liveable environment in Austria for decades. Not only does the organisation document environmental problems but it also develops concrete solutions based on scientific evidence and citizen participation. Through its work, Global 2000 promotes the importance of environmental awareness and empowers people to proactively take action. How does one portray an invisible catastrophe? The ‘Plastic Ocean’ project actually uses real plastic to visualise the surface of the ocean. This representation symbolises the rising 'sea level' of waste products and makes abstract figures physically tangible. Design as interpretation: a simple yet powerful metaphor explains complex environmental problems. The project proves that clarity of design is effective in transforming complex issues into immediate concern and motivating action.
